Carolina Care Plan and Consumers Life Are Closing

The first domino has fallen. Here we go.
Carolina Care Plan will cease operating in South Carolina at the end of this year. Consumers Life will cease operating in Georgia at the end of this year. So says their parent company, Medical Mutual of Ohio. The company has decided to concentrate all of its business in its home state as it braces for the onset of the “Obamacare” era in 2014.
Carolina Care PlanThat’s big news in the health insurance industry in Georgia and South Carolina, and will directly impact many of our clients among thousands of policyholders of these two carriers. (It will also directly impact the soon-to-be jobless employees of these carriers).
As of today the companies are not accepting new applications for coverage from individuals or groups. Those currently covered will be able to maintain their coverage through December 31, 2013. After that (or beforehand, really), they will transfer all policyholders to UnitedHealthcare (individual policyholders will be moved to Golden Rule Insurance, the individual carrier under the UHC umbrella).

There will be much more to report as we head towards 2014, so stay tuned…
