BlueChoice Health Plan is one of the health insurance carriers we use for group health insurance in South Carolina. Let’s get this out of the way first: It can be confusing to figure out the difference between BlueChoice and it’s parent company/big brother Blue Cross Blue Shield. They are under the same corporate umbrella but operate independently of each other, and thus wind up competing with each other. BlueChoice Health Plan offers some very nice benefits, however, that make them worth considering. To be frank, it is unlikely that a small business will find BlueChoice to be the cheapest option out there. But do you always buy the cheapest option in life? Here are a few reasons to consider BlueChoice Health Plan:
- A comprehensive copayment that covers pretty much anything that happens at your doctor’s office, including labs and X-rays.
- Chiropractic care is covered — you just pay a specialist copay (where applicable).
- Vision benefits — you get one exam per year and one pair of glass (or contacts) every other year.
- Dental — There is a modest dental benefit built into the plan’s premiums (an allowed benefit amount for preventive exams and cleanings), and more comprehensive coverage is available as a buy-up option.
- Underwriting that is a bit more flexible than many other carriers.
Beyond these benefits, the general plan designs are nice. Additionally, they’ve just (like, today) released newer plan options with higher deductibles that are designed to provide a lower-price option for groups who want these kinds of benefits at a lower price point. Those plans are available for effective dates beginning November 1.
