What is a Medicare Supplement plan?
A Medicare Supplement plan is designed to fill in the gaps or holes in Medicare Part A and B.
That’s why they are sometimes called “Medigap” plans.
These are private plans that cover various copays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs in Medicare. There’s no network to worry about – these plans work with any provider that takes Medicare.
Which Medicare Supplement plan is best?
Medicare supplement plans are sold by private companies, but the details of each plan are standardized by the federal government. The plans are labeled by a letter – like Plan A, Plan B, etc.
The most popular Medigap plan is Plan F, which is what a majority of people buy. It’s popular because it covers every out-of-pocket expense not covered by Medicare Part A and B – all copays, deductibles, etc.
Another popular plan is Plan G. It covers everything except the yearly deductible for Medicare Part B, which was $185 in 2019.
(Note: Due to changes enacted by the federal government, Plan F will not be available to people who become newly eligible for Medicare on January 1, 2020).
How to Enroll in a Medicare Supplement Plan
While Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by the government (Plan F is the exact same thing with every company selling it), insurance company prices will vary. AC Forrest recommends our clients purchase coverage with large, well-established companies that will provide you with stability in the long run.
Enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan shouldn’t take long. The entire process is completed online. We can meet in person if you’d like, but we often meet with clients via web conference, where we will share our computer screen with you and walk through the process together.
You’ll just need to have your Medicare ID number handy.
