Price Increase on Grandfathered BlueChoice Individual Plans

If you have a “grandfathered” individual health insurance plan with BlueChoice HealthPlan in South Carolina, listen up! We’ve got news about a big rate increase along with something you can do about it.

What is a grandfathered plan?

We are talking about policies that were set up prior to January 1, 2014. (In other words, this would be a plan that pre-dates Obamacare and has been grandfathered in). Employer/group health plans and the Obamacare-compliant “BlueOption” plans are not affected.

How much is the increase?

The increase on these grandfathered BlueChoice individual health insurance plans is 19.4%.

What can you do about it?

We’d encourage you to take a look at current plans to see if they might be a better fit and value. There is currently a “Special Enrollment Period” ongoing that would allow you to move into a current plan. If you move into a current BlueChoice individual plan (called “BlueOption” plans), any deductible already incurred during 2021 will transfer to the new policy.
