Walmart Pharmacy and BlueCross BlueShield

UPDATE: Walmart and CVS Caremark have reached an agreement, and Walmart will remain in their pharmacy network. So ignore what’s below!

Walmart has announced that their pharmacy will be leaving the CVS Caremark pharmacy network. This will impact policyholders with BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice HealthPlan (among many other insurance companies who utilize CVS Caremark for pharmacy).

The Walmart Pharmacy will not be in the network for most of their plans, including:

  • ACA-compliant individual plans (“Obamacare”)
  • Group plans (employers)

The only plans that will not be impacted by this change are the BCBS Medicare Advantage plans and Part D drug plans.

Walmart’s Sam’s Club division remains in the CVS Caremark pharmacy networks for all lines of business.

CVS Health has requested that Walmart continue to fill prescriptions as an in-network participating pharmacy through April 30, 2019, and is awaiting confirmation from Walmart.

CVS Health will notify any policyholders this change impacts to help them avoid disruption in therapy and transition easily to a new pharmacy.

Also of interest to some of our clients, the Silver Script Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (owned by CVS) is not impacted by this change. Walmart will remain as an in-network, non-preferred pharmacy in this plan.
