How do you know which Medicare supplement plan to buy???
Medicare supplement plans are standardized by the government and identified by a letter of the alphabet. So, for example, Plan F (the most popular and comprehensive) is the same with every carrier.
The only difference, really, is price. You’ll also want to consider the long-term stability of the insurance company and their pricing.
The tricky part is figuring out which plan is which! How do you distinguish Plan A from Plan F from Plan N (and the others in between)?
The following chart provides a checklist of benefits by each plan so you can become more familiar with them.
How to read the chart:
- If a check mark appears in the column, the Medigap policy covers 100% of the described benefit.
- If a column lists a percentage, this means the Medigap policy covers that percentage of the described benefit.
- If no percentage appears or if the column is blank, this means the Medigap policy doesn’t cover that benefit.
Note: The Medigap policy covers coinsurance only after you have paid the deductible (unless the Medigap policy also covers the deductible).
80% of people who buy Medicare supplement plans buy Plan F.
Why? It’s the most comprehensive solution, filling all the gaps and covering all the out-of-pocket costs left by original Medicare.
